Port Isabel Historical Museums

Port Isabel Historical Museum and the new Treasures of the Gulf Museum are open to all visitors.

Brownsville Historical Museum

A refurbished 1928 Southern Pacific Railroad depot is the setting for this museum, where you can learn about the first settlers in Brownsville, the military history of the area, and famous war heroes.

Willacy County Historical Museum

Local history, art, underwater artifacts from the coast, and natural history. Farm and Ranch Museum has cypress fence and gate through which stagecoaches; passed in 1866 from Corpus Christi to Brownsville. Open Wed. and Fri., from 2 to 5 p.m. Located at Harris and 7th Streets.

Iwo Jima Memorial

Fashioned from a photo of U.S. Marines planting the flag on Iwo Jima, this was the original statue used to cast the more famous monument in Arlington, VA. It is located on the campus of Harlingen’s Marine Military Academy.

Los Ebanos Ferry

The sole remaining hand drawn ferry in the U.S. across the Rio Grande connects the U.S. with Diaz Ordaz, Mexico, which lays a short drive from the river.

Tejano Walk of Fame

This Edinburg attraction honors the Tejano music stars whose South Texas music beat has captivated local, state, national and international audiences. At its unveiling in 1999, the Tejano Walk of Fame inducted five stars whose names were engraved in a marble star and placed in the walkway.

Coastal Studies Lab

The Coastal Studies Laboratory (CSL), established as a marine biology laboratory in 1973 in Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island, was reorganized and expanded in 1985 with a concentration on University education, public education and coastal research. The CSL’s public displays contain representative species of fauna and flora from the immediate area of the Lower Laguna Madre and South Padre Island. The displays are open to the public and to organized groups by appointment.

Gladys Porter Zoo

The Gladys Porter Zoo is an oasis nestled in the center of Brownsville, Texas. With 26 acres of lush tropical plants and some 1,600 animals, the Gladys Porter Zoo is known for its successes in breeding endangered species of wildlife.

World Birding Center

The Rio Grande Valley has long been recognized as a world-class birding destination. And now with the creation of the World Birding Center, Texas Parks & Wildlife, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services, and 9 valley communities, plan to expand awareness about this ecological treasure along the state’s southern border. The WBC is a network of nine sites dotted along 120 miles of river road from South Padre Island west to Roma, with habitats ranging from dry chaparral brush and verdant riverside thickets to freshwater marshes and coastal wetlands.

Texas Air Museum

The Texas Air Museum is a dedicated group of volunteers devoted to restoring, preserving, and sharing the history of military aviation. From retelling the stories of past military aviators to flying and maintaining the Museum’s many airworthy exhibits, the Texas Air Museum’s members each provide a valuable service to educating future generations about the adventures and sacrifices of the pioneers who helped bring aviation to where it is today.

The museum has an attractive art gallery to showcase monthly exhibits and programs. Since its opening at 500 S. Texas Blvd in March of 2009, it has presented many exhibits with related programs that provide special events for the community. In addition, the historical section of the Weslaco Museum provides guests with tons of interesting and insightful information about the culture and history of Weslaco.
